Defending AIG From Stephen Colbert's Angry, Pitchfork-Wielding Mob (Or Not)

As for me, I'm still sharpening my pitch-fork and preparing to join Stephen Colbert's angry anti-AIG mob.

Grassley on AIG execs: Quit or suicide

Sen. Charles Grassley is so angry over AIG bonuses that he says the executives should resign or kill themselves.

In a comment aired this afternoon on WMT, an Iowa radio station, Grassley (R-Iowa) said: “The first thing that would make me feel a little bit better towards them if they’d follow the Japanese model and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say I’m sorry, and then either do one of two things — resign, or go commit suicide.”

The radio clip was also aired on WTOP, a news radio station in Washington….

From Afghanistan to Anacostia ...
We Need Jobs and Education - Not War and Occupation!

While working people are up against evictions, foreclosures, unemployment, service cuts, and lack of affordable housing and healthcare, the U.S. government is continuing with the criminal war and occupation in Iraq, and deepening the war in Afghanistan. Over the next two years this will cost $200 billion - $274,000,000 a day. With 50,000 U.S. troops staying in Iraq to help prop up the puppet government, and thousands more headed to Afghanistan, the people of the Middle East and the United States can’t wait for the war and occupation to end. The movement for change must stay in the streets. The Vietnam War went on for seven years after a president won the election based on the promise that he would end the war. Everyday, innocent people will die and millions of our tax dollars - money that is desperately needed in communities here in America - will be spent. Join community activists, veterans and military families to discuss what President Obama’s plans mean for the wars and occupations, and for the struggle here at home.

Emergency Protest Against AIG Bonuses
Friday, March 20 at 12:30 pm
AIG Offices: 2020 K St. NW

Say "NO" to Million-Dollar AIG Exec Bonuses!
Stop Government/Big Business Theft from Workers!
Bail Out the People, NOT Insurance Giants & Banks!

Executives from bailed-out insurance giant AIG cashed $165 million in new bonuses this week. The company received $170 billion in federal bailout money since November. Just last month the Obama administration gave another infusion of tens of billions of tax dollars to AIG when the same executive team announced that the company suffered $61 billion in losses in the last three months of 2008.

In a mind-boggling decision, Obama’s Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner determined that the government does not have the legal authority to block the new bonuses. Truly amazing! And a good lesson for all workers about the true relationship between government and business. Keep in mind that the only reason AIG avoided bankruptcy was that the U.S. government provided billions more of our money to the same thieves.

Join an emergency protest and picket to denounce this outrage. Cities and states are slashing jobs and cutting social services, and people are being kicked out of their homes--where's the money for working people? Let's show Washington and Wall Street that they can't get away with stealing from workers time and time again. We have got to take to the streets to defend our jobs, our communities and our children’s future.

In an ABCNews.com post describing his March 17 interview with Sen. John McCain on Twitter -- a "twitterview" -- This Week host George Stephanopoulos uncritically reprinted McCain's claim during the interview that he "would have never bailed out AIG." Stephanopoulos did not note that while McCain originally stated in September 2008 that he opposed a federal bailout of AIG, McCain later stated that he supported it, as Media Matters for America has documented. Indeed, appearing on the September 16, 2008, edition of NBC's Today -- hours before the federal government announced up to $85 billion in loans for AIG -- McCain said that the situation could "harm the average American worker," but that "I do not believe that the American taxpayer should be on the hook for AIG" and that "we cannot have the taxpayers bail out AIG or anybody else." But then, after the government intervention had been announced, McCain appeared on ABC'sGood Morning America and while saying "on the bailout itself, I didn't want to do that," he then suggested it had been necessary, saying, "but there were literally millions of people whose retirement, whose investments, whose insurance were at risk here, and they were gonna have their lives destroyed because of the greed and excess and corruption." Further, a September 17, 2008, article on the Good Morning America interview, ABCNews.com reported: "Doug Holtz-Eakin, a senior economic adviser to McCain, sought to clarify McCain's position on the bailot [sic]. 'The senator supports the particulars of the action but regrets that circumstances forced us to actually have to do it.' "

During the Twitter interview, Stephanopoulos and McCain had the following exchange about AIG:
